Sgt. Bill Mahoney declined to identify the other boy who was struck with Hale, but was cautiously optimistic about his condition. The boys were riding a skateboard Saturday on Northeast Winn Road and North Bellefontaine Avenue near the Walnut Grove Apartments when the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m.
The six-year-old was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital following the accident with critical head injuries. Hale died at the scene.
Mahoney said the injured boy is now in serious condition. Hospital officials declined to comment because the boy’s name has not been released.
“I hope he’ll pull through,” Mahoney said. “It looks a lot more promising than it did last night.”
A minivan struck the boys. The female driver was headed west on Winn when the two children came down a hill out of the adjacent parking lot to the north on the skateboard.
“The woman stopped but not in time,” Mahoney said. “Unfortunately, she struck both of the children.”
The boys are believed to be from the area. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. She was released pending further investigation.
The neighborhood has a lot of traffic in the area and a lot of children.
Alcohol has been excluded as a possible contributing factor in the crash. Police are investigating to determine whether speed was a factor. | Robert A. Cronkleton, firstname.lastname@example.org
